Foundations Science, Unit S-F2: Weather and Seasons

Weather is all around us and changes every day. From sunny skies and strong winds to rain, clouds, and snow, students experience weather in different ways throughout the year. In this interactive audio reading lesson, learners will explore the difference between weather and seasons while building important science vocabulary, observation skills, classification skills, and pattern recognition. Through listening, reading, and review questions, students begin practicing the same thinking skills used by scientists and meteorologists to better understand the environment and the world around them.

STREAMSS Foundations Science: Weather and Seasons Audio Reading Lesson

This lesson supports foundational learning objectives connected to Science, Reading-to-Research, SEL-to-Social Studies, and interdisciplinary STREAMSS skill development.

Science (NGSS-Aligned Foundations Concepts)

  • K-ESS2-1: Use and share observations of local weather conditions to describe patterns over time.

  • K-ESS3-2: Ask questions to obtain information about the purpose of weather forecasting to prepare for and respond to severe weather.

  • 1-ESS1-2: Make observations at different times of year to relate the amount of daylight to the time of year.

  • 1-ESS1-1: Use observations of the sun, moon, and stars to describe patterns that can be predicted.

Science and Engineering Practices (NGSS)

  • Asking questions and defining problems.

  • Planning and carrying out observations.

  • Analyzing and interpreting patterns.

  • Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information.

Optional:

Reading-to-Research (ELA/Foundational Literacy)

  • Determine the meaning of domain-specific vocabulary related to weather and seasons.

  • Ask and answer questions about key details in an informational text.

  • Identify main ideas and supporting details in science-based readings.

  • Build vocabulary through listening comprehension and audio-supported reading.

  • Practice classification and categorization of informational concepts.

Mathematics Connections

  • Identify and recognize patterns over time.

  • Compare seasonal changes and environmental observations.

  • Organize information into groups and categories.

SEL-to-Social Studies Connections

  • Develop environmental awareness through observation of surroundings.

  • Build responsible decision-making skills related to weather preparedness.

  • Strengthen communication and discussion skills through review questions and classroom conversation.

  • Explore how weather and seasons affect communities, animals, plants, and daily life.
